Christian Nardi

For years a manager, then a painter: the story of someone who chose to steal time from haste and give it back to the light.

Biography

Christian Nardi was born in Cesena in 1969. For years his life ran along the rigorous, structured tracks of a management career, yet inside him a great passion for art always stayed alive. He spent his time studying the revolution of light of the French Impressionists and the earthy, immediate truth of the Italian Macchiaioli. He felt that those patches of colour belonged to him — but for a long time he remained an observer.

The turning point came in 2002. In his hands was Lust for Life, Irving Stone’s celebrated fictionalised biography of Van Gogh. That reading struck him deeply and gave rise to the desire to finally pick up a brush. He no longer wanted to watch others paint: he felt the moment had come to do it himself.

What gave confidence to this first impulse was the Cesena of those years, animated by a lively artistic ferment centred on the historic exhibitions in the hall of the city’s Caffè. That Caffè was not merely a bar but a meeting place: among the tables and walls covered in paintings, Nardi found himself immersed in a climate of sharing. There he met artists, listened to collectors, learned to look through their eyes, and breathed in an idea of art as something simple and accessible, born of real life and continuous dialogue.

It was in this vivid environment that, in 2003, he met the Maestro Michele Pagano. A sincere friendship grew between them, an affinity that would guide Nardi through an important period of training, helping him structure his research into landscape and still life.

The painting

Not description, but perception

Nardi’s painting develops far from preparatory drawings and purely academic rules. It is an instinctive painting, in which colour and chromatic relationships guide the work on the surface. Christian works the paint directly on the support — often wood, chosen for its living consistency — laying down the oil with broad brushstrokes and decisive strokes of the palette knife.

He goes outdoors and paints en plein air, letting wind and light pass through him, catching the exact shift of an instant. His is not a painting of description but of perception: by simplifying lines and layering vibrant tones, Nardi creates a bond between external reality and his inner world. The result is a fresh, spontaneous visual impression, capable of conveying a sincere humanity.
